How much raw food should I feed my pet?
For cats, the total ration is based on 2-3% of body weight for cats weighing above 3.5 kg, and 3-3.5% of body weight for cats below 3.5 kg.

For dogs, the recommended percentages vary based on factors such as the dog's current weight status, energy levels, and age.

For example, an adult dog at an ideal weight should eat 2-3% of HEALTHY their weight per day, while a puppy less than 1 year old or an underweight, high-energy adult dog should eat 3% of their weight per day. The exact amount can vary based on the dog's size, activity level, and metabolism.

For help determining how much your pet needs, use our Feeding Calculator or contact us for a more personalized meal plan.

Basing your approach on Healthy body weight is very important. If your dog weighs 60 lbs and should weigh 50lbs, base your calculation on the 50 lb weight. The same if your dog is under weight, base your calculation on desired healthy weight. Also make small gradual changes as you are working to affect a dogs weight increasing or decreasing feeding amounts in small increments.
What protein should I start with?
Most new raw feeders start with either green tripe or chicken as these are the more affordable products, with Turkey more costly than chicken, and beef the highest cost. Green tripe is the most cost-effective price and a canine super food. Although we will share that some humans do not like the smell, of course that is not the canine opinion!
What do I need to get started on a raw feeding plan?

Here's what you should have in your toolkit for a successful raw feeding experience:

  • Stainless steel dog bowl or silicone lick-mat or silicone lick bowl: Choose a non-porous option for feeding your dog. Stainless steel bowls are durable, easy to clean, and don’t harbor bacteria. Silicone lick-mats or bowls provide an interactive way for dogs to enjoy meals while remaining hygienic.
  • Nonslip silicone placemat: Provides a non-porous surface for food and water bowls and catches spills, making cleanup easy.
  • Food scale: Allows you to accurately measure portions so your dog receives the correct nutrition and maintains a balanced diet.
  • Food storage containers: Use non-porous materials such as BPA-free glass to store thawed meals. Portion meals for three days and refrigerate; remaining portions can be safely refrozen.
  • Anti-bacterial wipes: Use wipes or spray to clean countertops and food scales before and after preparing pet food.

By having these essential items in your raw feeding toolkit, you'll be well equipped to provide your pet with the best feeding experience possible.

How do I transition my dog to a raw diet properly?

Transitioning to a raw diet should be done gradually over 7-10 days. Monitor your dog's response and consult your veterinarian if needed.

  • Days 1-4: 20% Raw, 80% Kibble
  • Days 5-9: 50% Raw, 50% Kibble
  • Days 10-14: 80% Raw, 20% Kibble
  • Day 14+: 100% Raw Diet

A few tips for the transition:

  • Take it slow and adjust based on your pet’s needs.
  • Monitor digestion and comfort.
  • If your dog is hesitant, try warming the food slightly or adding bone broth.

Remember, we're here to support you every step of the way. Contact us anytime.

What should I expect when switching to raw?
When switching to a raw diet, you may notice changes in your pet's stool consistency, energy levels, and coat condition. Some dogs may experience a transitional period as their digestive system adapts to the new diet. Monitor your pet's overall health and consult with your veterinarian if you have any concerns. Typically, all changes are advantageous. You will likely find your pet has as in more energy, smaller and harder stools, clear eyes, and improved skin and coat.
How many calories do dogs need?
The caloric needs of dogs vary based on factors such as their size, age, breed, activity level, and overall health. Your veterinarian can provide guidance on determining the appropriate caloric intake for your dog or contact us for help determining how much your pet needs.
Do I have to feed 100% raw diet?

Feeding a 100% raw diet is not a requirement, and some pet owners choose to incorporate raw food alongside other feeding methods. At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we firmly believe that processed foods should be avoided when feeding our pets. However, we also understand that a completely raw diet may not be practical for everyone. That's why we're here to offer a solution.

If you find it challenging to transition your dog to an exclusive raw diet, we recommend supplementing their current diet with 50% raw dog food.

We believe that every small step toward a healthier diet matters. In fact, in the book Forever Dog, it’s highlighted that even a 10% change toward real foods can increase a dog’s life expectancy by 3-4 years. This statistic emphasizes the importance of incorporating healthy changes into your pet's diet.

Let us help you make a positive change in your dog's diet. Explore our range of raw dog food options and start improving their health one meal at a time.

Remember, every fresh ingredient counts when it comes to giving your dog the best nutrition possible.

If you need guidance on safe and economical ways to introduce these healthy changes, please reach out to us.

What's the best way to portion my pet's meals?
Portioning meals depends on factors such as your pet's weight, age, activity level, and dietary needs. After fully thawing your raw pet food, we recommend using a food scale to measure out the exact portion your pet needs for each meal. We recommend storing your portioned meals in a nonporous container, such as BPA-free glass. You can safely store 3 days worth of raw pet food in your refrigerator and refreeze the rest.
Can I cook the food before feeding?
No, we do not recommend cooking the food. Our raw food products are intended to be fed raw to preserve the natural nutrients and enzymes. Cooking the food may alter its nutritional composition and may not provide the same benefits as feeding it raw.
How often should I feed my dog/puppy?
The frequency of feeding depends on your dog's age and individual needs. Puppies generally require more frequent meals, while adult dogs may be fed once or twice a day. For adult dogs, we recommend feeding a raw diet either once or twice per day. If twice per day, split the daily suggested feeding in half. For puppies, we recommend feeding raw food 3-4 times per day, splitting each meal equally based on suggested daily feeding quantity for their predicted adult weight. Consult with your veterinarian for specific feeding recommendations based on your dog's age and health or contact us for more specific help.
How soon can I transition my puppy to raw food?
Puppies can be transitioned to a raw food diet once they are weaned and their digestive system is ready for solid food. It is recommended to consult with your veterinarian for specific guidance on transitioning your puppy to a raw diet based on their breed, size, and health.
What if my pet is a picky eater? What if my pet won't eat the food?
Most dogs not only like, but love, raw food. There are those dogs, of course, like people, who are uncomfortable with change which is why we recommend sticking to the transitional guidelines. If your dog is a finicky eater you can try adding an egg, sardines, bone broth, or healthy treat on top. Be patient and confident in your efforts, your dog can tell if you are nervous. For more help, be sure try consulting with your veterinarian or our nutrition experts for personalized advice.
Can I switch from meat source to meat source?

Absolutely! At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we understand the importance of providing a variety of protein sources in your dog's diet. You have the flexibility to switch between different meat sources, as long as your dog doesn't have any allergies or sensitivities to specific ingredients.

We actually recommend incorporating a variety of meat sources into your dog's meals on a weekly basis. Offering 2-3 different meat proteins per week not only adds excitement to their meals but also provides a well-rounded nutrient profile. Your dog will appreciate the delicious variety and the nutritional benefits that come with it!

We offer a range of proteins in our dog foods, including Beef, Chicken, and Turkey. Each protein source brings its own unique nutritional composition, ensuring that your dog receives a diverse array of essential nutrients.

When introducing new meat sources, it's important to do so gradually. This allows your dog's digestive system to adjust and ensures that any potential dietary sensitivities can be identified. Monitoring your pet's response to the new protein source is crucial to ensure their well-being.

If you have any concerns or questions about switching protein sources, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian. They can provide personalized guidance based on your dog's specific needs and dietary sensitivities.

Can I start incorporating raw foods into my dog's diet without completely switching?

Yes, you can start incorporating raw foods into your dog's diet gradually. Begin by replacing a small portion of their current diet with raw food and gradually increase the proportion over time.

If you find it challenging to transition your dog to an exclusive raw diet, we recommend supplementing their current diet with 50% raw dog food. By incorporating fresh and nutritious ingredients into their meals, you can make a significant impact on their overall health and well-being.

When you add fresh, wholesome ingredients to your dog's diet, you're providing them with essential nutrients and benefits that processed foods simply can't match. From improved digestion to healthier skin and coat, a balanced combination of raw dog food and their current diet can make a world of difference.

We believe that every small step towards a healthier diet matters. Even if you can't commit to a fully raw diet, introducing raw dog food as a supplement is a fantastic way to enhance your dog's health and vitality. Your dog will thank you for the extra love and care you put into their meals.

In fact, in the book Forever Dog it's highlighted that even a 10% change in nutrition to all-natural real foods can increase a dog's life expectancy by 3-4 years. This statistic emphasizes the importance of incorporating healthy changes into your pet's diet.

You can start by introducing raw treats and fresh whole foods to their current diet! You can give your dog sardines, raw eggs, fresh raw vegetables, fresh fruit, and raw bones. Raw green tripe is also a great addition to your dog’s current diet and we have many options available for you (tripe organ blends, tripe-stuffed hooves, & freeze-dried tripe treats).

Remember, every fresh ingredient counts when it comes to giving your dog the best nutrition possible. If you need guidance on safe and economical ways to introduce these healthy changes, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Can I feed kibble and Sirius Natural Pet Foods products? Can I mix raw food and kibble?

Yes, it is indeed possible to mix raw food with kibble in a dog's diet. Some pet owners do this as a transitional strategy when shifting their pets from a kibble-based diet to a raw food diet. Others do it as a long-term approach to provide their pets with a varied diet that includes both raw food and kibble. If you’d like more information on how to transition from kibble to raw, please visit our social media (Facebook, Instagram).

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we believe in optimizing your dog's health and nutrition, even if feeding an exclusive raw diet isn't feasible for everyone. By supplementing your dog's current diet with at least 50% raw dog food, you can provide essential nutrients and experience the benefits of a raw diet.

Our California Wild raw food is formulated to meet and exceed AAFCO standards, ensuring a balanced and complete diet for your dogs and cats. You will also find that Green tripe is an excellent product to incorporate into your nutrition plan. It can be fed as a whole meal, or a supplement in your raw “recipe” if you are making your own food. The tripe organ meat blend is an excellent product to add to your recipe as it is rich in organ meats which can be very hard to find with affordable quality at the grocery store.

When combining kibble and raw food, it is important to use a premium kibble that uses natural ingredients and is grain-free. This allows you to optimize your dog's health while working within your budget. Adding a source of omega-3 fatty acids and digestive enzymes, such as salmon oil and goat's milk, can further enhance your dog's overall health and digestion.

However, there's a caveat to this: the digestive rates for raw food and kibble can be different, which might have an impact on your dog's digestion. For instance, raw food typically digests faster than kibble. Therefore, if your pup struggles with digestion and you decide to feed both raw and kibble, it's recommended to feed them in separate meals rather than mixing them together in one meal.

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods we understand that every dog is unique, and our knowledgeable team is here to help you determine the best approach for your pet. If you have any specific questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're dedicated to providing you and your pets with the highest quality nutrition for a healthier and happier life.

Should I add anything to my dog's Sirius Natural Pet Food meals?

Green Tripe (Rough and Puppy), Green Tripe & Trachea, Xkaliber: Green tripe can easily be a stand-alone meal, many of our customers use tripe as their sole food and their dogs are thriving.

It should be noted, however, that the manufacturer Green Tripe.com has not yet conducted a formal feeding trial or extensive nutrient analysis to confirm that their products meet all of the nutrition levels set by the AAFCO Nutrient Profiles. As a result, all Green Tripe products do not currently meet the AAFCO standards. Although many of our customers use these products as meals, if you are concerned about ensuring every meal is Balanced and Complete, we recommend using these products only as occasional meals or as meal enhancers. Tripe is also a great addition to our Carolina Wild meals, which are Balanced and Complete.

Pancreas: Pancreas is not a meal, but rather an organ supplement that can replace pharmaceutical therapies for EPI dogs. Always consult your vet, but we believe raw pancreas can replace your RX for EPI dogs and your dog will thank you for it and not have to tolerate the “nasty” medications.

Organ Blends: The tripe organ meat blend is an excellent product to add to your recipe as it is rich in organ meats which can be very hard to find with affordable quality at the grocery store.

Carolina Wild: All Carolina Wild Raw pet food products are complete and balanced meals, meet and exceed AAFCO standards for all life-stages, are all-natural, use zero synthetic vitamins, minerals, additives, preservatives, or fillers. All Carolina Wild raw meals are crafted by Certified Dog Nutritionists and are hand-made in small-batches using all locally sourced ingredients. Carolina Wild uses real, all-natural ingredients to ensure the proper balance of all vitamins and minerals. That means, you don’t have to add anything to the Carolina Wild Raw Pet Food products!

Is raw food suitable for senior dogs?
Raw food can be suitable for senior dogs, but it is important to consider their individual health needs and consult with your veterinarian or one of our nutrition experts. Activity level is an important consideration here. If your senior is a “couch potato”, adjust food volume accordingly so as not to increase weight. On the other hand, if changing to raw feed increases your dog’s activity level, make sure you are feeding enough in proportion to increased activity. See our feeding calculator for more assistance.
What is AAFCO?

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) sets the nutritional standards for pet food manufacturers in the U.S. Pet food manufacturers can call their food “balanced and complete” when they meet the AAFCO requirements.

To make a “complete and balanced” nutritional adequacy claim, pet food manufacturers must either conduct a feeding test (AAFCO protocol) or meet the minimum AAFCO nutrient profile.

Life-stage claims are included as a subset of the nutritional adequacy claim. Food for adults will also say: “Exceeds AAFCO canine nutritional standards as a complete meal for adults.” Food for puppies, adults, and senior dogs will also say: “Exceeds AAFCO canine nutritional standards as a complete meal for all life stages.”

You will see “complete and balanced” claims for kibble, fresh-cooked, and raw pet food.

What does this all mean? Basically, you don’t have to add anything to the meal when it’s “Complete and Balanced.”

What about our food? All our Carolina Wild Raw Pet Food meals exceed the AAFCO nutritional standards as balanced and complete for all life stages. Carolina Wild is made up of meaty meat (muscle meat, connective tissue, fat), organ meat, and bone. Carolina Wild Raw Dog Food meals also include egg, and fresh fruits and vegetables. There are no fillers, no preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors, no grain, and no synthetic vitamins or minerals. Carolina Wild uses real, all-natural ingredients to ensure the proper balance of all vitamins and minerals. That means, you don’t have to add anything to our products! What you see is what you get – real, all-natural, food that contains all the essential nutrients your pet needs for optimal health in the correct proportions. The complete list of ingredients are available on our website for each Carolina Wild meal.

Why is raw better than fresh, cooked food?

Raw food diets are often considered closer to a natural and species-appropriate diet for pets. Raw diets typically contain fewer processed ingredients and retain the natural nutrients present in raw ingredients, which can be beneficial for overall health and well-being.

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we understand that dogs are uniquely designed to thrive on raw, unprocessed food. Their short, simple digestive tracts and high levels of hydrochloric acid in their stomachs are perfectly suited to derive nutrients from raw animal protein, fat, and bone.

When food is cooked, its composition is altered, leading to a decrease in the availability of essential nutrients and enzymes. This means that when your dog consumes cooked food, their body has to work harder to extract the nutrients they need.

With raw food, you're providing your dog with nutrition in its most digestible state. By feeding them raw, unprocessed ingredients, you're giving them the opportunity to easily absorb and utilize essential nutrients.

However, we fully understand that when it comes to pet nutrition, there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. Every pet is unique and may have specific dietary needs, and every pet parent has their own financial or practical limitations.

While the debate between raw and cooked pet food often takes center stage, the true nutritional difference lies between fresh food and processed food.

When choosing the best diet for your pet, consider the following tips:

  • Opt for high-quality, nutrient-dense ingredients: Look for pet food that uses top-quality ingredients known for their nutritional value. We prioritize sourcing high-quality, natural ingredients that provide the essential nutrients your pet needs for optimal health.
  • Ensure meals are complete and balanced: It’s important to follow AAFCO guidelines to ensure meals contain all necessary nutrients in the right proportions.
  • Preserve nutrient integrity: The preparation method plays a significant role in preserving nutrients. We take great care to prepare meals in a way that minimizes nutrient depletion or damage.
  • Freshness matters: Nutrients gradually deplete as ingredients age, so it's essential to provide food as close to the manufacturing date as possible.

The debate between cooked and raw, as well as fresh and processed, revolves around how nutrients are affected by preparation methods. Some argue that heavy processing leads to nutrient loss, while others believe even light cooking compromises nutrients.

While there may be truth to both perspectives, the key lies in balance. At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we believe that the less processing done to food, the better.

For most dogs, a raw diet that retains the natural integrity of ingredients is the ideal choice. However, some dogs with sensitive digestive systems or compromised immune systems may benefit from lightly cooked food.

Studies have shown that both raw and lightly cooked diets can lead to improvements compared to heavily processed kibble. Ultimately, the goal is to provide fresh, wholesome food and reduce reliance on heavily processed options.

In the book Forever Dog, it’s highlighted that even a 10% change in nutrition to all-natural real foods can increase a dog’s life expectancy by 3–4 years. This statistic emphasizes the importance of incorporating healthy changes into your pet’s diet.

If you need guidance on safe and economical ways to introduce these changes, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Remember, the most important thing is to feed your pet fresh food—whether raw or lightly cooked—and reduce reliance on heavily processed kibble.

What’s the difference between freeze-dried, dehydrated, and air-dried raw diets? Are they actually raw? Why is frozen better?

Raw dog food is a fresh, uncooked, and unprocessed diet for dogs. It consists of raw meat, bones, and organs, resembling what canines ate before domestication. Advocates of raw dog food believe that it provides numerous benefits, including improved coats, dental health, and immune systems.

Dehydrated raw dog food is another option, where raw ingredients are gently dehydrated to remove moisture while preserving nutrients and enzymes. It offers the benefits of a raw diet in a lightweight and nutrient-dense form, making it convenient for camping or travel. However, it loses it’s natural moisture content.

Freeze-dried raw dog food is created through a process that involves freezing the food and then slowly removing the water through sublimation. This method preserves the nutritional content of the food and offers the convenience of a lightweight, shelf-stable product. However, this product does still require additives and/or preservatives to maintain shelf life.

Air-dried raw dog food is produced by slowly evaporating moisture from the raw ingredients, eliminating pathogens while preserving vital nutrients. It provides a nutrient-dense diet similar to raw food and offers convenience and shelf stability.

Ultimately, each dog is different, and their dietary needs may vary, so it's crucial to prioritize their optimal health and well-being with proper attention to detail and research.

Why is raw better for my dog's teeth?

Raw food diets, especially those that include chewing on raw bones or cow hooves, can help promote dental health in dogs. Chewing on raw bones can assist in removing plaque and tartar buildup, leading to healthier teeth and gums.

Adding raw green tripe and/or raw organ meats can further support dental health in dogs for several reasons:

  • Optimal Calcium to Phosphorus Ratio: Raw green tripe has a 1:1 ratio of calcium to phosphorus and a lower phosphorus content compared to many other meats. This makes it a beneficial protein source for dogs with kidney concerns, where phosphorus levels matter.
  • Supports Bone & Muscle Development: High-quality proteins and amino acids in green tripe and organ meats support muscle growth and maintenance. The balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio also helps maintain strong bones and teeth while supporting proper muscle contraction, mobility, and coordination.
  • Promotes Dental Health: The natural texture of green tripe helps clean teeth as dogs chew, acting like a gentle, natural floss and supporting overall oral hygiene.
I've noticed my dog pooping less. Is that normal?
It is normal for dogs on a raw diet to have smaller and less frequent bowel movements compared to dogs on processed diets. This is because raw food is more easily digestible, and there are fewer fillers and unnecessary ingredients in the diet. Thus your dog is digesting, “using” all the food, and little is wasted and eliminated. The poop will tend to be harder than when your dog was eating kibble. Again, this is because your dog’s body is using all the moisture in the food, making it easier to digest.
Can dogs eat raw eggs?

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we highly recommend incorporating raw eggs into your pup's meal plan a few times a week. They are not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals like Vitamin A, Riboflavin, Folate, Vitamin E, Iron, Selenium, and Fatty Acids. These nutrients can contribute to your dog's overall health and well-being.

However, it's important to note that while raw eggs are beneficial, we recommend feeding your dog a whole egg (including both the egg white and yolk) in moderation. Raw egg whites contain an enzyme that can bind with biotin, a crucial B complex vitamin involved in energy conversion. Feeding your dog whole raw eggs daily can lead to a biotin deficiency over time, which can affect metabolism, skin, and coat health.

If you prefer to avoid this issue, you have alternatives. Cooking the eggs or just feeding your dog the yolks can still provide them with valuable nutrition. However, it's worth noting that raw eggs offer the highest nutritional value for dogs, as cooking can cause some nutrient loss.

When it comes to eggshells, they can also be a part of your dog's meal if they enjoy the extra crunch. Eggshells are an excellent source of calcium and contain nutrients like collagen, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, and glucosamine, which support healthy bones and teeth. Don't worry about your dog's stomach. Their digestive system, with its short, simple tract and high levels of stomach acid, can handle raw foods and break down eggshells effectively.

We understand concerns about the safety of raw eggs due to potential salmonella contamination. However, dogs have stomachs specifically designed for raw animal protein, fat, and bone digestion. Their short, simple digestive tracts and high levels of hydrochloric acid make them better equipped to handle bacteria in raw foods compared to humans. To ensure safety, always source raw eggs from reliable, healthy chickens and store them properly.

It's essential to be aware of possible egg allergies in dogs, as they can occur just like in humans. Watch out for symptoms such as sneezing, swelling, hives, lethargy, coughing, or difficulty breathing, which may indicate an allergic reaction.

So, can dogs eat raw eggs? Absolutely! Just remember to feed them in moderation, a few times a week, and maintain a balanced raw diet to ensure your dog receives all the nutrients they need.

Is raw dog food safe?

We understand that many pet owners have concerns about the safety of raw dog food. However, when properly processed and handled, raw dog food is safe for your pets.

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we prioritize the health and well-being of your pets, and we want to assure you that raw dog food can be a safe and nutritious option.

To ensure the safety of raw dog food, we recommend following these simple steps—just as you would when handling meat for your own family:

  • Keep frozen until use: Raw dog food should be kept frozen until you are ready to serve it. This helps maintain freshness and reduces the risk of bacterial growth.
  • Keep raw meats separate from other foods: Store raw dog food separately from other foods to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Practice proper hygiene: Wash all working surfaces, utensils, hands, and any items that come into contact with raw meat, fish, and poultry.
  • Refrigerate leftovers immediately or discard: Promptly refrigerate or dispose of leftovers to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Thaw raw food in the refrigerator: Thawing in the refrigerator helps maintain food integrity while minimizing bacterial growth.

It's important to note that bacteria grow best at temperatures between 70°F and 100°F. However, most bacteria grow extremely slowly, if at all, below 40°F. Your refrigerator should be set between 34°F and 40°F to ensure a safe storage environment.

Feeding your dog a raw diet can be a healthy and beneficial choice. By following proper handling practices and maintaining good hygiene, you can confidently provide a safe and nutritious diet.

What about salmonella?

Salmonella is a valid concern when it comes to raw food, and at Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we take pet safety and food hygiene very seriously. We understand the importance of providing safe and healthy food for pets. While it is true that raw food, including raw meat, has the potential to contain bacteria such as Salmonella, it's important to note that the risk of Salmonella is not exclusive to raw food.

Salmonella can be found in various food sources, including fresh produce, cooked meat, and even processed pet foods. The key to mitigating the risk of Salmonella is through proper handling, sourcing high-quality ingredients, and implementing strict food safety protocols.

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we prioritize the safety and well-being of our customers' pets. We follow rigorous sourcing practices and partner with trusted suppliers who maintain stringent quality control measures. Our ingredients are carefully selected and handled to minimize the risk of bacterial contamination, including Salmonella.

Additionally, we adhere to strict food safety guidelines throughout our production process to ensure that our raw food products meet the highest standards. We maintain a clean and sanitized facility, and our team is trained in proper food handling and hygiene practices.

It's important to note that the presence of Salmonella in raw food does not mean that pets will necessarily become ill. Dogs and cats have evolved with the ability to handle certain levels of bacteria in their digestive systems. Their strong stomach acid and short digestive tracts are designed to help them digest and eliminate potentially harmful bacteria.

Furthermore, pet owners can take measures to minimize the risk of Salmonella transmission. This includes practicing good hygiene, such as washing hands thoroughly after handling raw food and cleaning food preparation surfaces and utensils. It's also important to store and handle raw food properly, following recommended guidelines for safe storage and preparation.

Ultimately, the risk of Salmonella contamination is not exclusive to raw food. With proper sourcing, handling, and food safety practices, raw food can be safely incorporated into a pet's diet, just like any other fresh food. We prioritize the safety and well-being of pets and strive to provide the highest quality raw food products that meet stringent safety standards, giving pet owners peace of mind when feeding their pets.

What's wrong with kibble?

Kibble, or dry processed dog food, has been a popular choice for feeding dogs for many years. However, there are several concerns associated with feeding kibble that dog owners should be aware of.

Firstly, the manufacturing process of kibble involves high-temperature cooking, which can significantly alter the nutritional composition of the ingredients. The high heat destroys many of the natural enzymes, vitamins, and beneficial nutrients present in the original ingredients. As a result, synthetic nutrients are often added back in during the production process to meet the minimum nutritional requirements for dogs.

Secondly, kibble typically has a high carbohydrate content. Carbohydrates, such as grains and fillers, are commonly used as inexpensive sources of calories and to bind the kibble together. However, dogs have limited ability to digest and utilize carbohydrates efficiently. A diet high in carbohydrates can lead to issues such as obesity, diabetes, and digestive problems in dogs.

Furthermore, kibble often contains low-quality ingredients and by-products. This includes meat meals, which are rendered products made from parts of animals that are not suitable for human consumption. These ingredients may be of questionable quality and can contribute to digestive issues and food sensitivities in some dogs.

The dry nature of kibble also presents hydration challenges for dogs. Compared to a natural, moisture-rich diet, kibble has a significantly lower water content. This can lead to inadequate hydration, especially for dogs that don't drink enough water. Chronic dehydration can have negative effects on overall health and may contribute to urinary tract issues.

Additionally, the shape and texture of kibble encourage rapid eating without much chewing. Dogs often swallow kibble pieces whole, which can lead to poor dental health and increased risk of dental diseases such as plaque buildup and periodontal issues.

It's important to note that individual dogs may have different sensitivities and reactions to kibble, and some dogs may thrive on certain high-quality kibble brands. However, these concerns highlight the potential drawbacks of relying solely on kibble as the primary source of nutrition for dogs.

In contrast to kibble, many pet owners are turning to raw food diets for their dogs. Raw diets, which consist of uncooked, natural ingredients such as raw meat, bones, and organs, aim to provide dogs with a more biologically appropriate and nutrient-rich diet. Raw food diets offer higher moisture content, natural enzymes, and a wider range of essential nutrients that are more easily absorbed and utilized by dogs.

It's essential to consult with a veterinarian or a veterinary nutritionist before making any significant dietary changes for your dog. They can provide guidance based on your dog's specific needs, health conditions, and dietary sensitivities. We’re happy to help. Feel free to contact us.

Can human food be added to a raw diet?

Yes, it is possible to add some human food to your dog's diet. However, it's important to note that not all foods safe for humans are safe for dogs.

Here are some examples of human foods that dogs can safely enjoy in moderation:

  • Sweet potato: Rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Cooked sweet potatoes can be served as a nutritious treat.
  • Pumpkin: A great source of fiber that supports digestive health. Can be fed plain or mixed into meals.
  • Raw meaty bones: Options like chicken necks or beef ribs provide dental benefits and natural nutrients. Always supervise your dog when feeding bones.
  • Ground bone: Provides calcium and essential minerals. Ensure bones are finely ground to prevent choking.
  • Organ meats: Liver and kidneys are nutrient-dense and beneficial but should be fed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
  • Raw eggs: A great source of protein and nutrients. Can be served whole or added to meals.
  • Vegetables: Dogs can enjoy vegetables like broccoli, spinach, and celery, which provide valuable vitamins and minerals.
  • Fruits: Apples and watermelon can be offered as occasional treats. Remove seeds and pits and serve in small pieces.
  • Some dairy: Plain yogurt or goat’s milk can provide probiotics and calcium. Monitor for lactose intolerance.
  • Bone broth and fish stock: Excellent for hydration and added nutrients.

It is crucial to avoid feeding dogs foods that are toxic to them, such as chocolate, onions, grapes, and raisins. These can be harmful and even life-threatening.

Introduce new foods gradually and monitor your dog's response. If you have any concerns or questions, consult your veterinarian or contact our nutrition experts for personalized guidance.

Are vegetables healthy for dogs?

Vegetables can provide additional nutrients and fiber to a dog's diet.

Certain fruits and vegetables stand out for their remarkable health benefits. Broccoli, kale, and especially broccoli sprouts are excellent sources of cancer-fighting and anti-inflammatory polyphenols. Blueberries, with their special affinity for the brain and nervous system, and cranberries, which contribute to bladder and kidney health, are also highly recommended. In fact, most berries make a great choice for your dog's diet.

Research has shown that vegetables play a crucial role in reducing the risk of cancer, not only in humans but also in our beloved canines. Fruits and vegetables offer important immune benefits that contribute to overall health.

The secret lies in polyphenols, bioactive substances found in all fruits and vegetables. Interestingly, your dog's digestive system cannot fully digest polyphenols. Instead, they pass through the small intestine to the colon, where they are fermented by beneficial bacteria.

Polyphenols possess powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Extensive studies have explored their role in preventing and treating chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders. Additionally, their immune benefits primarily come from short-chain fatty acids, which are byproducts produced when bacteria consume polyphenols. Maintaining the right balance of fats in your dog's microbiome is crucial, making Step 4 of our approach worthwhile.

It's important to note that these valuable polyphenols are exclusive to plant sources and cannot be obtained from animal-based ingredients.

While fruits, berries, and vegetables are essential additions to a raw diet, it's equally important to be mindful of starchy carbohydrates like grains and legumes. These can feed the wrong types of gut bacteria and contribute to chronic inflammation. Opting for low-sugar berries instead of high-sugar fruits is also recommended.

By embracing the power of vegetation in your dog's diet, you're providing them with a wide range of health benefits. Remember to maintain a balance and consult with your veterinarian for personalized advice.

Help, my pet is getting diarrhea!
Diarrhea can occur during the transition to a new diet. It is a common response as the digestive system adjusts. Slowly introducing the new food and giving your pet time to adapt can help alleviate the issue. We also recommend adding canned pumpkin to help with the GI upset during this initial phase. If the problem persists or worsens, consult with your veterinarian for further guidance.
My pet is drinking less water than usual after switching. Is this ok?
It is normal for pets to drink less water when transitioning to a raw diet. Raw food has higher moisture content compared to dry kibble, which can reduce the need for excessive water intake. However, ensure that your pet has access to fresh water at all times and monitor their hydration levels. If you have concerns, consult with your veterinarian.
I'm traveling with my dog. How should I continue raw feeding while we're traveling?

When it comes to traveling with your pet and their raw meals, there are a few options to consider. One option is to pre-portion your pet's meals and pack them in a cooler for the journey. This ensures that their food remains fresh and safe during travel. Remember to bring frozen chubs on ice, storage containers, and a food scale to accurately measure the portions.

If you're staying at a destination for an extended period, you may explore the possibility of shipping our raw food directly to your location. Be sure to check our shipping and transit dates to ensure that the food arrives in a timely manner. This can be a convenient option, especially if you're traveling long distances or have limited space for carrying frozen meals.

In addition to packing the raw meals, don't forget to consider other essentials for your pet's travel. Bring along their favorite toys, bedding, and any necessary medications. It's also important to research and familiarize yourself with any pet-friendly accommodations or facilities available at your destination.

By planning ahead and taking necessary precautions, you can ensure that your pet's raw food needs are met while traveling and that they have a comfortable and enjoyable journey.

What is a slow-feeder dog bowl and what is the point?
A slow-feeder dog bowl is designed with obstacles or patterns that make it more challenging for dogs to consume their food quickly. It promotes slower eating, which can aid in digestion, reduce the risk of choking or bloat, and provide mental stimulation for your pet.
What is a lick mat and what is the point?
A lick mat is a textured mat that allows you to spread food, such as raw food or treats, on its surface. It provides a fun and interactive way for pets to enjoy their food and promotes mental stimulation. Lick mats can help with anxiety, boredom, and provide a calming activity for your pet.
What is green tripe? Why is it green?

Green tripe is the nutrient-rich stomach lining of grazing animals, aka ruminant animals like cows, buffalo, and sheep. Unlike the bleached tripe you might find in supermarkets, green tripe is raw and unprocessed. Although it isn’t green in color, it’s green in that it is all-natural. It’s important that green tripe be served raw because cooking it destroys the important digestive enzymes and natural probiotics in the tripe.

Green tripe is highly beneficial for pets, as it contains enzymes, beneficial bacteria, and essential nutrients. When it comes to raw feeding, raw green tripe is the thing that the pros apart from the novices. We recommend green tripe to all of our customers as it’s beneficial for so many reasons. We’ve seen it radically transform skin and coats in family pets and show dogs alike, help picky eaters and sensitive stomachs actually enjoy eating again, improve digestion for dogs with special conditions like EPI, improve skeletal and muscle development in post-surgical rehabilitation, provide enough nutritional power to fuel the strength of many working dogs, freshen breath, and help fight kidney disease.

What is High-Pressure Pasteurization (HPP) and are your products made this way?

Let’s start by saying that at Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we do not use High-Pressure Pasteurization (HPP). We believe that by avoiding HPP, we can provide even greater benefits to our customers and their beloved pets. However, we understand that HPP is a topic of debate in the raw dog food industry. Some people are against feeding HPP food to their dogs, while others believe it provides a way to mitigate the risk of bacteria in the food. To understand the topic of HPP, let's explore what it is and address some common misconceptions.

HPP, also known as high-pressure pascalization or cold pasteurization, is a cold temperature method used to prevent food spoilage. It applies extremely high pressure to foods to manage bacteria, without using heat. Many grocery store products, including juices, fruit purées, dips, sauces, pre-made meals, meats, seafood, and soups, are often high pressure pasteurized. It's important to note that HPP is not legally required for raw pet food manufacturers. However, due to increasing concerns about pet food safety, some manufacturers have chosen to use HPP to address potential risks associated with bacteria.

One common misconception is that HPP eliminates all bacteria, including spores. While HPP kills bacteria in the food, it does not eliminate spores, such as Clostridium botulinum. Spores can become dormant during HPP and germinate later. However, it's worth mentioning that botulism or other Clostridium poisoning is very rare in dogs, and the risk is more relevant to the owner handling the food.

Another concern related to HPP is the possibility of toxins leaching from packaging into the food. Chemical compounds like BPAs in food packaging can potentially be harmful. However, research shows that the pressures and hold treatment times used for raw dog foods do not cause significant transfer of packaging chemicals into the food. It's recommended to choose HPP foods that use BPA-free packaging materials and have been tested for any leaching of chemicals.

HPP foods offer advantages in terms of minimizing the risk of bacteria for both dogs and their owners. These foods undergo a specific HPP process that involves placing the product in hermetically sealed packaging, subjecting it to high levels of isostatic pressure through cold water, and holding it for a certain period. The high pressure disrupts the cell membranes of microorganisms in the food, leading to their death.

Research on HPP's effects on raw dog food indicates that it may alter the texture and color of the food. However, nutrient losses during HPP appear minimal at the pressures and hold times used for raw pet foods. Studies show that HPP can improve the digestibility of meat and does not significantly affect minerals. Some changes may occur in the protein structure, color, and texture of the meat, but these factors are generally more important to humans than to dogs.

It's important to note that feeding HPP foods is a personal choice. Many raw feeders have been feeding non-HPP foods, including homemade raw foods, for years without issues. Dogs have robust digestive systems that can efficiently handle raw meat, including spoiled or contaminated meat, without getting sick. However, for those who seek peace of mind and prefer to minimize the risk of bacteria, HPP foods offer an advantage.

When considering HPP foods for your dog, it's crucial to ask manufacturers about their specific HPP process, nutrient testing, compensation for any nutrient losses, and the use of antioxidants to prevent lipid oxidation. Additionally, ensuring BPA-free packaging and testing for any leaching of chemicals is important.

When you choose to purchase products from Sirius Natural Pet Foods, you are choosing transparency and integrity. We exceed all government certification criteria, focus on sourcing the highest quality ingredients, maintain proper manufacturing and equipment standards, and handle all ingredients and products with meticulous care. Our commitment to freshness and safety is evident in every step of our production process. By not employing HPP, we believe we are able to maintain the natural integrity and quality of our raw food products. We believe that providing a minimally processed and natural diet is crucial for pets to thrive and maintain optimal health.

Does raw pet food cause aggression?

We totally understand that many pet owners have concerns about the potential link between raw feeding and aggression in dogs. It's a topic that often sparks debates and worries among dog lovers. But here's the scoop: raw feeding alone doesn't cause aggression in pets. Aggression is a multifaceted behavior influenced by various factors like genetics, lack of socialization, training, fear, anxiety, territoriality, resource guarding, or overall well-being. To tackle these issues, a comprehensive approach is necessary. It involves proper training, positive reinforcement techniques, behavior modification strategies, and possibly seeking the guidance of a professional dog behaviorist. It's all about understanding the root causes and implementing effective solutions. So, rest assured, raw feeding is not the culprit behind aggression.

Now, let's talk about the benefits of raw feeding. We believe in providing dogs with a diet that aligns with their natural needs. A raw diet, packed with real meat, bones, and organs, mimics what our canine buddies would eat in the wild. Many pet parents who have made the switch to raw feeding report positive changes in their dogs' behavior, such as reduced hyperactivity and increased calmness. It's all about giving them the right nutrition for optimal physical and mental health. But hey, responsible raw feeding is key. It's important to approach it with care and consider your dog's individual needs.

Who formulates your raw diet recipes?

Sirius Natural Pet Foods offers two product lines: Green Tripe and Carolina Wild.

Green Tripe

All our Green Tripe and organ meats from manufacturer GreenTripe.com are made with single or limited ingredients. Because our Tripe & Raw Pet Foods products are single organ items or organ blends, they are not considered “formulated diets” in the traditional sense.

The manufacturer, GreenTripe.com, has not conducted formal feeding trials or nutrient analysis to certify these products against AAFCO nutrient profiles. As a result, these products are not classified as “complete and balanced” under AAFCO guidelines.

However, this does not mean they are unsafe. These products are fresh, natural foods and are commonly used as meal enhancers, rotational feeding options, or components of a balanced raw diet.

Many of our customers successfully use Raw Green Tripe (Rough and Puppy Grinds) and Xkaliber as meals or supplements.

The Tripe Organ Meat Blend is more nutrient-dense and is best used as part of a balanced recipe or as a supplement rather than a standalone meal.

Carolina Wild

All our Carolina Wild Raw Pet Foods are formulated by Doug and Dawn Tisdale of The All Natural Pet.

The Tisdales are Certified Pet Nutritionists who hand-trim all proteins in small batches using locally sourced ingredients at their commercial-grade kitchen in Beaufort, SC.

All Carolina Wild meals are complete and balanced, meet and exceed AAFCO standards, and are made using all-natural ingredients with no synthetic vitamins, minerals, additives, preservatives, or fillers.

Each recipe is registered with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and routinely tested through Clemson University’s Agricultural Laboratory to evaluate nutritional profiles and support allergy considerations.

Ingredients are typically received within 1–2 days of production to ensure freshness. All meals are ground, mixed, and packaged in a commercial-grade, stainless steel kitchen that is inspected by the SCDA, holding these products to the same high standards required for human food.

Because everything is made in small batches, each package is hand-labeled, quality-checked, and regularly tested. All food is immediately frozen after preparation to preserve freshness and provide your pet with wholesome, carefully crafted meals.

Is your food BARF Model or Prey Model?

Sirius Natural Pet Foods offers two product lines: Green Tripe and Carolina Wild.

Green Tripe products are either single ingredient or organ blend grinds. These are not recipes, and therefore not specifically part of the BARF or Prey Model. However, they would appropriately fit into either category.

Carolina Wild is a complete and balanced raw meal made with a thoughtful blend of muscle meat, organ meat, ground bone, fresh fruits and vegetables to provide essential nutrients in their natural form. Each recipe is carefully crafted to deliver the proper balance of proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals your pet needs to thrive—without the use of synthetic additives or fillers.

Carolina Raw Pet food is based on the principles of the Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) model, which emphasizes a diet that mimics what animals would eat in the wild. We believe in providing a balanced and natural diet that promotes the overall well-being of your pets.

What is denatured, 3D, or 4D meat? Does Sirius Natural Pet Foods use these meats?

Denatured, 3D, or 4D meat refers to ingredients sourced from animals that are dead, dying, diseased, or disabled prior to processing. In some cases, these meats are chemically treated (“denatured”) to indicate they are not intended for human consumption.

While denatured meats are permitted in pet food classified as animal feed, Sirius Natural Pet Foods does not use denatured, 3D, or 4D meats in any of our products .

It’s important to understand that much of the commercial pet food available in stores, particularly traditional kibble, is regulated as animal feed. Under these regulations, a wide range of ingredient sources may be permitted that differ from the standards applied to fresh, minimally processed foods. That includes the use of denatured meats.

We take a different approach by prioritizing high-quality, responsibly sourced ingredients and maintaining strict safety and handling standards throughout our production process.

For example, all Carolina Wild Raw Pet Foods are produced in a South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA)–inspected, commercial-grade kitchen using locally sourced ingredients—the same suppliers and ingredients used by local restaurants.

These meals are prepared under strict food safety standards using high-quality, fresh ingredients. Because our products are raw and intended specifically for pet consumption, they are not labeled for human consumption. However, this designation is based on regulatory classification and raw handling, not ingredient quality.

Our commitment is simple: to provide clean, safe, and thoughtfully sourced nutrition that you can feel confident feeding your pets.

Do you add vitamins and minerals to your products?

No synthetic vitamins or minerals are added to any of our products.

Sirius Natural Pet Foods offers two product lines: Green Tripe and Carolina Wild.

Green Tripe products are single-ingredient organs or organ blends. That means organs are the only ingredients. Nothing else is added. These products are not formulated meals, but rather nutrient-dense, natural components that can be used to enhance or build a balanced diet.

Carolina Wild, on the other hand, is designed to be a complete and balanced meal. What makes it truly unique is how that balance is achieved.

Instead of relying on synthetic vitamins or mineral additives, Carolina Wild recipes are carefully formulated using whole, natural ingredients, such as muscle meat, organ meat, bone, fresh fruit, and vegetables. With Carolina Wild meals, every ingredient serves a specific nutritional purpose.

This whole-food approach allows each recipe to naturally provide the full spectrum of essential nutrients needed to meet and exceed AAFCO standards for all life stages, without the need to “add back” nutrients through artificial supplementation.

In other words, nothing is added to make up for what’s missing because nothing is missing. Every ingredient is intentionally selected to create a well-rounded, biologically appropriate diet using real food.

All Carolina Wild meals are crafted by Certified Pet Nutritionists and prepared in small batches using locally sourced ingredients, ensuring both nutritional integrity and quality you can trust.

What is green tripe? Why is it green?

Green tripe is the nutrient-rich stomach lining of grazing (ruminant) animals such as cows, buffalo, and sheep. Unlike the bleached tripe found in grocery stores, green tripe is raw and unprocessed.

Despite its name, it isn’t actually green in color. The term “green” refers to it being in its natural, unbleached state. It’s important that green tripe be served raw, as cooking destroys the beneficial digestive enzymes and natural probiotics that make it so valuable.

Green tripe is widely recognized as one of the most powerful additions to a raw diet. It contains naturally occurring enzymes, beneficial bacteria, and essential nutrients that support overall health and vitality in pets.

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we’ve seen green tripe make a meaningful difference for pets of all ages—from improving skin and coat quality, to supporting digestion in pets with sensitive stomachs or conditions like EPI, to helping picky eaters enjoy food again.

Key Benefits of Green Tripe:

  • Supports Digestive Health: Rich in natural enzymes and beneficial bacteria (including Lactobacillus acidophilus), helping break down food and improve nutrient absorption while supporting a healthy gut microbiome.
  • Enhances Nutrient Absorption: Provides a natural balance of nutrients, including an optimal calcium-to-phosphorus ratio and essential fatty acids.
  • Encourages Healthy Eating Habits: Highly palatable—even for picky eaters—due to its natural aroma and flavor.

What are the benefits of raw organ meats for dogs?

Raw organ meats (e.g., liver, kidney, heart) are among the most nutrient-dense foods you can include in your dog’s diet. They are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that support immune health, organ function, and overall well-being.

Key Benefits of Raw Organ Meats:

  • High Nutrient Density: Rich in essential vitamins (A, B-complex, D, E, K) and minerals such as iron, zinc, selenium, and copper
  • Excellent Source of Protein: Supports muscle development and provides essential amino acids
  • Natural Source of Vitamins: Vitamin A supports vision and immune health; Vitamin D supports calcium absorption and bone strength
  • Bioavailable Minerals: Easily absorbed nutrients support circulation and overall nutrient utilization
  • Enhances Palatability: Naturally appealing aroma and flavor encourage even picky eaters
  • Supports Digestive Health: Contains natural enzymes and beneficial compounds that aid digestion
  • Supports Joint Health: Certain organs (trachea, gullet) provide glucosamine and chondroitin
  • Supports Healthy Weight: Lean, nutrient-dense proteins help maintain ideal body condition

How Organ Meats Support the Body:

  • Liver – The Nutrient Powerhouse: Should make up ~10% of the diet. Extremely rich in vitamins (especially B vitamins) and minerals like copper and folate, providing a large portion of your dog’s nutritional needs.
  • Heart – The Taurine Source: Rich in taurine and CoQ10, supporting heart health and energy production. Typically fed at ~5% of the diet.
  • Kidney, Pancreas & Spleen – Glandular Support: Provide enzymes and nutrients that support corresponding organ systems. Pancreas is especially beneficial for digestive support.
  • Brain – Neurological Support: Rich in DHA, supporting brain and nerve health, especially in growing puppies.
  • Variety Matters: Additional organs like lung, eyes, sweetbread, and green tripe help round out the diet. Aim to include a mix of organs totaling ~5–10% of the diet (beyond liver), if well tolerated.

Why Liver Alone Is Not Enough:

A common mistake in pet nutrition, both among raw feeders and in many commercial pet foods, is relying too heavily on liver as the primary (or only) organ source. While liver is incredibly nutrient-dense, it does not provide the full spectrum of nutrients found in other organs. Feeding only liver can lead to nutritional imbalances, and overfeeding it may contribute to excess vitamin A intake.

This issue is often seen in commercial pet foods, where organ variety is limited due to cost constraints. Even in raw feeding, sourcing a wide variety of organs can be difficult and expensive.

A more balanced approach includes a rotation or blend of multiple organs, such as kidney, spleen, pancreas, and heart, to better mimic a natural, whole-prey diet.

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, our organ blends are designed to help solve this problem by providing a convenient, balanced variety of organs in one product, at an affordale price.

Feeding Tips:

  • Introduce Gradually: Start with ~5% organ content and increase up to ~20% as tolerated
  • Monitor Digestion: Organ meats are nutrient-dense and can cause digestive upset if introduced too quickly
  • Source Matters: Choose high-quality, responsibly sourced organs for optimal nutrition

Why Choose Sirius Natural Pet Foods:

  • Premium Quality: Sourced from high-quality, grass-fed animals
  • Strict Standards: Produced under high safety and quality standards
  • Nutritional Integrity: Preserved in raw form to retain natural nutrients
  • Trusted Brand: A reliable source for species-appropriate nutrition

What products are safe for cats?

We offer a range of products that are suitable for cats, including complete and balanced meals specifically formulated to meet their nutritional needs. These products provide the essential nutrients that cats require for optimal health.

Carolina Wild Raw Cat Food (Chicken): A limited ingredient, balanced and complete meal, made from fresh ingredients, and no additives or fillers. We offer this product in 1lb chubs.

Tiger’s Choice: A fine grind of heart, liver, and green tripe. We offer this product in 1lb or 2lb chubs.

Are your products organic? Hormone and antibiotic-free? Grain-free?
Our products are made from high-quality, natural ingredients. While not all our ingredients are certified organic, we prioritize sourcing ingredients that are free from hormones and antibiotics. Our products are grain-free, as we believe in providing species-appropriate diets for pets.
Are your products heated in any way?
Our products are made using raw ingredients and are not subjected to high heat during the manufacturing process. This helps preserve the natural nutrients and enzymes present in the ingredients.
What is MSM? Do you use any in your food?

MSM is an abbreviation for Mechanically Separated Meat. MSM is produced through a process where machines apply intense pressure to carcasses and frames, extracting any remaining meat and sinew to be used as byproducts in pet food. While some fresh pet food companies incorporate MSM into their products as a cost-effective option, claiming it to be human-grade, we take a different approach.

Recipes containing MSM often exhibit an ultra-fine "mushy" texture and pale color. Additionally, due to their high calcium content, they can lead to chalky stools for your pets. We believe that your pet's well-being is of utmost importance, and that's why we never use MSM in our food.

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we are committed to providing the highest quality ingredients for your cats and dogs. We proudly offer a range of chunky recipes for dogs, allowing you to see and appreciate every ingredient that goes into their meals.

How do you ensure your raw food is safe?

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, the safety and well-being of your pets is our top priority. We take a comprehensive approach to food safety, starting with sourcing, continuing through production, and extending all the way to delivery and storage in your home.

Safety During Sourcing & Manufacturing:

  • Minimally Processed: Our foods are simply ground and frozen—nothing more. This preserves natural nutrients while minimizing unnecessary handling.
  • USDA-Inspected Meats: All proteins are sourced from USDA-inspected facilities to ensure quality and safety.
  • Responsibly & Locally Sourced Ingredients: We use high-quality, human-grade ingredients sourced from trusted local suppliers—the same sources used by restaurants.
  • Grass-Fed & Pasture-Raised: Our beef comes from pasture-raised, grass-fed cattle with no antibiotics or added hormones.
  • Humane Farming Practices: Our suppliers follow modern, humane animal care practices developed by Temple Grandin.
  • No Compromises: Never any additives, fillers, by-products, denatured meats, or rendered meals.
  • Small Batch Production: All Carolina Wild recipes are made fresh daily in small batches—hand-trimmed, ground, packaged, and labeled to ensure quality control at every step.
  • Professionally Overseen: A Certified Pet Nutritionist oversees every stage of production for all Carolina Wild foods, ensuring consistency, balance, and safety.
  • SCDA Approved: All Carolina Wild recipes are registered with and approved by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA).
  • Sanitary Facility Standards: All Carolina Wild food is prepared in a commercial-grade kitchen under strict sanitation and hygiene protocols, with trained staff following proper food handling procedures.

Cold Chain, Shipping & Delivery Safety:

  • Frozen for Safety: All products are kept frozen at approximately -10°F to preserve freshness and inhibit bacterial growth.
  • Temperature-Controlled Shipping: Orders are shipped in insulated foam coolers with gel packs or ice blankets, selected based on season and shipping distance.
  • Delivery Within Safe Windows: We only ship to locations where we can confidently maintain safe delivery timelines and temperatures.
  • What to Expect on Arrival: Most orders arrive fully frozen. If partially thawed but still cold to the touch, the product is still safe to feed or refreeze.
  • Refreezing Guidance: Any product not used within three (3) days should be refrozen to maintain quality and safety.

Safe Handling at Home:

  • Proper Storage: Keep raw pet food refrigerated at 34°F–40°F or frozen until ready to use.
  • Understand Temperature Risk: Bacteria grow most rapidly between 70°F–100°F but grow very slowly below 40°F—making proper storage critical.
  • Safe Handling Practices: Handle raw pet food the same way you would raw meat for your family—wash hands, clean surfaces, and avoid cross-contamination.

By combining high-quality sourcing, careful small-batch production, strict temperature control, and proper handling practices, we are able to provide raw pet food that is both safe and nutritionally exceptional.

How long do your products keep in the freezer?
Our products are carefully packaged to maintain freshness and quality. When stored properly in the freezer, our products can typically be kept for two years. Please refer to the packaging for specific storage recommendations.
How long do your products last in the refrigerator?
Once thawed, our raw food products should be treated like any perishable food item and consumed within a few (3-4) days. We recommend following the storage and handling instructions provided with each product.
What is the best way to thaw your food?
We recommend thawing our frozen raw food products in the refrigerator. This allows for a slow and safe thawing process, maintaining the nutritional integrity of the food.
How long does it take to thaw your products?
Thawing times may vary depending on the product, size 1, 2 or 5 lb. chub, and the temperature of your refrigerator. As a general guideline, our products typically thaw within 24 to 48 hours when stored in the refrigerator.
Are cow hooves safe for dogs?

Cow hooves can be a natural and safe chew option for dogs. However, it is important to supervise your dog while they chew and remove the hoof if it becomes small enough to pose a choking hazard. Some dogs may chew aggressively, so it's always important to consider your individual pet's chewing habits.

Please be aware that some dogs may have more sensitive stomachs. Although they may enjoy chewing and eating the hoof, it may be too dense for their digestion, especially if they chew it quickly and aggressively. This may cause nausea. In the event this happens, do not continue to offer the hooves.

How long do your cow hooves stay fresh after being removed from the freezer?

We offer two types of cow hooves: Regular Cow Hooves and Tripe-Stuffed Cow Hooves.

Regular cow hooves are naturally shelf-stable and can be kept in a cool, dry place for an extended period after thawing. We recommend using them within a reasonable timeframe to maintain freshness and quality. Although, most dogs won’t let them last that long!

Tripe-stuffed cow hooves require a bit more care. If your pet does not finish the tripe inside, we recommend refrigerating or refreezing the product.

  • Refrigerated: Fresh for up to 3 days
  • Frozen: Can be stored for up to 2 years
Do I need to refreeze my cow hoof if my dog doesn’t finish it?

It’s highly unlikely—dogs absolutely love our cow hooves. But in the rare event your pup doesn’t finish it, what you do next depends on the type of hoof:

Regular Cow Hooves: These are shelf-stable once thawed. You can simply store them in a cool, dry place and offer them again later. No need to refreeze.

Tripe-Stuffed Cow Hooves: Because these contain raw green tripe, they should be handled like raw food. If not finished, we recommend refrigerating or refreezing the hoof.

  • Refrigerated: Safe for up to 3 days
  • Refrozen: Can be stored long-term (up to 2 years)

But in our experience… most dogs don’t leave much behind anyway.

Can I thaw and refreeze your products?
Yes, it is safe to thaw and then refreeze raw pet food. It does not affect the quality or safety of the product.
How do I prepare your products?
Thaw the chub or meal bag in a BPA-free glass or other non-porous material container and store in the refrigerator until fully thawed. DO NOT microwave the food to thaw it, especially the tripe, your microwave will retain the odor. Once thawed, use a food scale and portion out each meal. You can store three days worth of product in the refrigerator and the remaining product should be refrozen. Meals should be served at room temperature. Set aside containers just for your dog’s food. Be sure to wash the containers and feeding bowls in the dishwasher.
Can I feed kibble and Sirius Natural Pet Foods products? Can I mix raw food and kibble?

Yes, you can mix raw food with kibble. Many pet owners use this approach as a transition from kibble to raw, while others choose to feed both long-term to provide variety and improved nutrition.

If you’d like tips on transitioning your pet to raw or incorporating it into your current routine, we regularly share guidance and feeding tips on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we believe in improving your pet’s nutrition at any level. Even if feeding 100% raw is not feasible, incorporating as little as 25–50% raw can provide meaningful benefits.

Our Carolina Wild meals are complete and balanced, meeting and exceeding AAFCO standards using whole food ingredients. Green Tripe is also an excellent addition, whether used as a full meal, topper, or part of your own raw feeding plan. The tripe organ meat blend is especially helpful for adding nutrient-dense organ variety that can be difficult to source on your own.

If you choose to feed both kibble and raw, we recommend selecting a high-quality kibble made with natural ingredients. Adding omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon oil) and digestive support like goat’s milk can further support your pet’s health.

One important consideration is digestion. Raw food and kibble digest at different rates. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, it may be best to feed them as separate meals rather than mixing them together.

Every pet is different, and we are happy to help you determine the best approach for your dog. If you have questions, please contact us.

Should I add anything to my dog's Sirius Natural Pet Food meals?

The answer depends on which product line you are feeding. Sirius Natural Pet Foods offers two distinct approaches: Carolina Wild and Green Tripe & Organ-Based Products.

Carolina Wild (Complete & Balanced Meals):

Our Carolina Wild Raw Pet Food meals are fully balanced and complete for all life stages. They are formulated using whole, natural ingredients to meet and exceed AAFCO standards, without the need for synthetic vitamins or additives.

No additions are needed. These meals are designed to provide everything your pet needs in the correct proportions. What you see is what you get—real, whole foods with a nutritional purpose behind every ingredient.

Green Tripe, Trachea, & Xkaliber (Single Organ & Organ Blends)

Products like Green Tripe (Rough Grind), Green Tripe (Puppy), Tripe with Trachea, and Xkaliber are made from single organs or organ blends with nothing else added.

These products are incredibly nutrient-dense and versatile. They can be used as:

  • Meal enhancers or toppers
  • Part of a balanced raw feeding plan
  • Occasional standalone meals
  • High-value treats
  • Added to any Carolina Wild Raw pet food

While many of our customers successfully use these products as full meals, they are not classified as “complete and balanced” under AAFCO guidelines. For pet parents who prefer that standard, these products are best used alongside a balanced diet.

Tripe Organ Blend:

The Tripe Organ Blend is a nutrient-dense mix of organ meats designed to support a well-rounded raw feeding approach.

Organ variety can be difficult to source and balance on your own. This blend makes it easy to incorporate essential organ nutrients into your dog’s diet without the guesswork.

  • Ideal for adding organ diversity to homemade or raw diets
  • Rich in naturally occurring vitamins and minerals
  • Best used as a supplement, not a standalone meal
  • Typically fed at 5–10% of the total diet

Raw Pancreas:

Raw Pancreas is not intended to be fed as a standalone meal. It is a functional organ supplement, most commonly used to support dogs with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI).

It provides a natural source of digestive enzymes (amylase, lipase, and protease). While many pet parents use it as part of an EPI management plan, we always recommend consulting with your veterinarian to determine the best approach for your pet.

For feeding guidance, see our pancreas feeding instructions for EPI pets.

However, we understand that HPP\ is a topic of debate in the raw dog food industry.

What is the shelf life of the freeze-dried products?

Freeze-dried products are known for their long shelf life. However, due to the packaging we currently use, we recommend using the product within 6 months of the production date for optimal quality.

Once opened, we recommend consuming the product within 1 to 2 months.

To maximize shelf life and maintain freshness, store the product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

After opening, exposure to air and humidity can reintroduce moisture into the product, which may impact quality over time. To help preserve freshness:

  • Store Properly: Keep the product in an airtight container or tightly reseal the original packaging after each use
  • Use a Desiccant Packet: Adding a desiccant or moisture absorber can help prevent humidity from affecting the product
How does your subscription service work? Do you offer auto ship?

Yes, we offer a flexible subscription (auto-ship) option designed specifically for frozen, perishable products.

Subscriptions can be set to your preferred schedule, whether that’s weekly, monthly, or another time frame that works best for you. All orders are shipped once per week on Mondays.

Because our products are frozen and perishable, our process is slightly different from traditional auto-ship programs. Instead of automatically charging your card, we give you full control over each shipment.

On the Wednesday prior to your scheduled Monday shipment, you will receive an email with your order invoice and a secure payment link. At that time, you can:

  • Review your order and complete payment
  • Make changes to your order before paying
  • Skip the shipment by taking no action (no charge, no shipment)

We’ve intentionally designed our system this way to provide maximum flexibility. Although you have to acknowledge and pay for an order each time, it’s a small inconvenience that prevents unwanted shipments, especially in situations like travel or schedule changes.

Think of it as a convenient reminder to reorder, with your preferences already saved. You stay in control while still enjoying the ease of a subscription.

You can update your products, adjust your schedule, pause, or cancel your subscription at any time.

If you need assistance or have any questions, please contact us

How much do I need to order for my subscription?

The amount you should order depends on your pet’s size, age, activity level, and feeding plan. Whether you are feeding a fully raw diet or supplementing with our products, it’s important to match your order to your pet’s daily intake.

To get started, use our feeding calculator. If you need help determining the right quantity, we are happy to assist. Please Contact Us.

Shipping & Order Size Considerations:

Because we ship frozen products, order size can impact shipping efficiency. UPS applies a surcharge to packages over 50 lbs, so keeping orders within optimal ranges can help reduce costs.

While not required, the following order sizes are typically the most efficient for shipping and value:

  • Small Box: 15 one-lb chubs or 8 two-lb chubs
  • Medium Box: 20 one-lb chubs, 12 two-lb chubs, or 5 five-lb chubs
  • Large Box: 36 one-lb chubs, 20 two-lb chubs, or 8 five-lb chubs

Our minimum order is 20 lbs of frozen product. Our most common box sizes are 20 lb and 40 lb, with a maximum of 60 lbs per box. For larger orders, we can split shipments into multiple boxes to help manage shipping costs.

Each cooler is individually packed, allowing you to mix and match products within the same order. This gives you flexibility to customize your subscription based on your pet’s needs and preferences.

I have 2 dogs, do I need 2 subscriptions?

Not necessarily. Many customers with multiple dogs combine their pets’ needs into a single subscription.

The best approach depends on each dog’s size, dietary needs, and feeding plan. To help determine how much food you’ll need, we recommend using our feeding calculator.

From there, you can decide whether it makes more sense to manage one combined subscription or separate subscriptions for each dog.

If you’d like help setting this up, we’re happy to guide you. Please Contact Us.

Do I need to subscribe?
Subscribing to Sirius Natural Pet Foods's service is optional. You can choose to order products on a one-time basis or set up a subscription based on your preference and convenience.
Where do you ship?

We proudly ship Sirius Natural Pet Foods products to 35 states across the Eastern and Southern United States. All orders are shipped via UPS Ground unless expedited shipping is requested.

Because we ship frozen, perishable products, maintaining product quality and safety is our top priority. To ensure your order arrives in optimal condition, we limit shipping to locations that can be reached within a maximum of four (4) days in transit.

Due to this requirement, we are currently unable to ship to the following states:

AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, IA, MT, ND, NE, NM, NV, OR, SD, WA, and WY.

For full details on shipping timelines, packaging, and policies, please review our Shipping Policy.

If you are located outside of our current shipping zone and are looking for Green Tripe products, we recommend contacting our distributor GreenTripe.com or visiting their Pet Store Locator to find retailers near you.

How often do you ship?

We ship all orders via UPS Ground from our location in Yemassee, SC every Monday. If a national holiday falls on a Monday, orders will ship on Tuesday instead.

This schedule helps ensure your pet’s food arrives fresh and properly chilled. By shipping at the start of the week, we avoid delays that could occur if a package sits in transit over the weekend.

Most orders arrive between Tuesday and Friday, depending on your location.

Order cutoff: Please place your order by noon on Friday to be included in the following Monday’s shipment.

How does local pickup work?

Local pickup is available in Yemassee on Mondays from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm at 6 Dairy Farm Road, Yemassee, SC 29945 .

Additional pickup options at our Beaufort location can be arranged as needed.

How long will it take for my orders to arrive?

Most orders arrive within 2–4 days after shipment, depending on your location.

Orders ship on Mondays from our facility in Yemassee, SC. For many customers, deliveries arrive as early as Wednesday. Locations farther from our shipping origin (such as KS, WI, MN, and TX) typically receive orders on Thursday.

Delivery timing is based on your UPS shipping zone, but all orders are scheduled to arrive within our safe transit window to ensure your pet’s food stays cold and fresh.

What's the minimum amount that I have to order?

Our recommended minimum order is 20 pounds of frozen product. This helps maximize shipping efficiency and gives you the best value on a per-pound basis.

That said, we are flexible and happy to accommodate smaller orders when needed.

For the best “bang for your buck” on shipping, these box sizes are ideal:

  • Small Box: 15 one-lb chubs or 8 two-lb chubs
  • Medium Box: 20 one-lb chubs, 12 two-lb chubs, or 5 five-lb chubs
  • Large Box: 36 one-lb chubs, 20 two-lb chubs, or 8 five-lb chubs

We also offer sample-sized orders if you’d like to try our products. However, because all shipments require insulated packaging with coolers and ice packs to maintain safe temperatures, shipping costs may still be higher than expected for smaller orders.

In many cases, UPS Ground shipping can exceed $20 for small boxes, even if the total product weight is low.

Do I need to be home in order to receive my shipment?
No, you do not need to be home in order to receive your shipment. However, we do recommend unpacking your box and placing your frozen products in the freezer as quickly as possible.
How much does shipping cost? How do I optimize my rates for my orders?

All Sirius Natural Pet Foods products are shipped via UPS Ground. Shipping costs are calculated directly by UPS based on three factors: package weight, box size, and delivery location (shipping zone). We do not mark up shipping costs and always aim to secure the best possible rates for our customers.

Because we ship frozen, perishable products, we limit our delivery range to locations that can be reached within a 3–4 day transit window to ensure your order arrives cold and safe.

How to Optimize Your Shipping Costs:

  • Stay under 50 lbs per box: UPS applies a significant surcharge once a package exceeds 50 lbs. Even 50 lbs + 1 oz is billed as 51 lbs, which can noticeably increase cost.
  • Order in efficient box sizes: Our most cost-effective packaging options are 20 lb and 40 lb boxes.
  • Use standard pack sizes:
    • Small Box: 15 one-lb chubs or 8 two-lb chubs
    • Medium Box: 20 one-lb chubs, 12 two-lb chubs, or 5 five-lb chubs
    • Large Box: 36 one-lb chubs, 20 two-lb chubs, or 8 five-lb chubs
  • Maximize box capacity: A 40 lb box fits 8 five-lb chubs, 20 two-lb chubs, or 36 one-lb chubs.
  • Split larger orders: Our maximum is 60 lbs per box, but splitting into multiple boxes can sometimes reduce shipping costs.
  • Mix products freely: Each cooler is packed individually, so you can combine different products within the same shipment.

Minimum Order: 20 lbs of frozen product is recommended for the best value.

We are happy to ship smaller sample orders. However, because all shipments require insulated packaging with coolers and ice packs, shipping costs may still exceed $20 even for lighter boxes.

For full details, please review our Shipping Policy.

When should I order more to avoid running out?

We recommend placing your next order at least one week before you expect to run out of food. This ensures enough time for processing, shipping, and delivery.

We ship orders at the beginning of the week to keep products within a safe transit window and avoid weekend delays.

  • Order by noon on Friday to be included in the following week’s shipment
  • Orders ship on Monday (or Tuesday if a UPS holiday is observed)
  • Delivery typically takes 2–4 days depending on your location

Ordering ahead helps ensure your pet’s food arrives fresh, cold, and right when you need it.

Expedited shipping options such as 2 Day Air or Next Day Air are available if needed, but they do come at a significantly higher cost.

Orders shipped outside of our standard Monday schedule may incur additional handling fees due to extra carrier pickup costs.

If I'm not on a subscription, when should I put in a new order?

If you are not on a subscription, we recommend placing your next order at least one week before you expect to run out of food. This allows time for processing, shipping, and delivery.

We ship at the beginning of the week to ensure your order arrives fresh and avoids weekend delays.

  • Order by noon on Friday to be included in the following week’s shipment
  • Orders ship on Monday (or Tuesday if a UPS holiday is observed)

Planning ahead helps ensure your pet never runs out of fresh, high-quality food.

Is raw dog food safe?

We understand that safety is one of the most common concerns when it comes to raw feeding. The good news is that when properly sourced, handled, and stored, raw dog food is both safe and highly nutritious for your pet.

At Sirius Natural Pet Foods, we follow strict sourcing, production, and handling standards to ensure the safety and quality of every product we offer.

Safe Handling Guidelines:

Handling raw pet food is very similar to handling raw meat for your own household. Following a few simple practices helps ensure safety:

  • Keep frozen until use: Store raw food frozen until ready to serve
  • Thaw in the refrigerator: Thaw gradually to maintain freshness and safety
  • Keep separate: Avoid cross-contamination with other foods
  • Practice proper hygiene: Wash hands, surfaces, and utensils after handling
  • Refrigerate leftovers promptly: Use within 3 days or refreeze if needed

Bacteria grow most rapidly between 70°F and 100°F, but growth slows significantly below 40°F. Keeping food properly refrigerated (34°F–40°F) or frozen helps maintain a safe environment.

By following these basic guidelines, you can confidently and safely feed a raw diet as part of your pet’s routine.

For more detailed guidance, please review our Safe Handling Instructions.

  • Minimally Processed: Our foods are simply ground and frozen. Nothing more.
  • Small Batch Production: All Carolina Wild recipes are made fresh daily in small batches. Hand-trimmed, ground, packaged, and labeled to ensure quality control at every step.
  • Professionally Overseen: A Certified Pet Nutritionist oversees every stage of production, ensuring consistency, balance, and safety.
  • SCDA Approved: All Carolina Wild recipes are registered with and approved by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA).
  • Sanitary Facility Standards: All food is prepared in a commercial-grade kitchen under strict sanitation and hygiene protocols, with trained staff following proper food handling procedures.

  • Proper Storage: Keep raw pet food refrigerated at 34°F to 40°F or frozen until ready to use.
  • Understand Temperature Risk: Bacteria grow most rapidly between 70°F and 100°F but grow very slowly below 40°F, making proper storage critical.
  • Safe Handling Practices: Handle raw pet food the same way you would raw meat for your family. Wash hands, clean surfaces, and avoid cross-contamination.

By combining high-quality sourcing, careful small-batch production, strict temperature control, and proper handling practices, we provide raw pet food that is both safe and nutritionally exceptional.

It’s highly unlikely your dog won't finish a cow hoof. Dogs absolutely love them! But in the rare event your pup doesn’t finish it, what you do next depends on the type of hoof:

Regular Cow Hooves : These are shelf-stable once thawed. You can store them in a cool, dry place and offer them again later. No need to refreeze.

Tripe-Stuffed Cow Hooves : Because these contain raw green tripe, they should be handled like raw food.

If I choose to feed raw food to my pet, what precautions should I take to protect my family?

When it comes to handling raw pet food, maintaining proper hygiene practices is crucial. Just like when cooking for yourself and your family, it's important to follow standard sanitary habits when handling raw meat for your furry friends. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw food to prevent the spread of bacteria. Additionally, make sure to clean any surfaces or utensils that come into contact with raw food to avoid cross-contamination. Anti-bacterial wipes work well here.

After your pet is done eating, sanitize their food bowls to keep them clean and free from harmful bacteria. It's recommended to store any refrigerated leftovers in a glass food storage container to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage. Remember to wash pet dishes regularly to keep them hygienic and pick them up after mealtime to avoid food spoilage.

When handling raw dog food, it's important to keep it frozen until ready to use and promptly refrigerate or discard any leftovers. By practicing these proper hygiene practices, you can ensure the safety and well-being of both your pet and your household.
